Why this fixes a non-retracting shade
- Restores tension: New spring brings back the pull-up force the shade needs.
- OEM-style fit: Sized for Irvine Shade tubes (choose the correct tube and width above).
- DIY-friendly: Replace the spring assembly on one end; no special tools.

The "auto-stop" piece controls stopping and smoothness, but when the spring itself fatigues, the shade loses power. Installing a full spring replaces the internal mechanism that actually lifts the shade.
Quick Tube Size Check: Nickel vs. Quarter
Don’t get stuck trying to decide whether your tube measures .73", .81", or exactly 1". Use the real-world eyeball test first:
- .75" Valu-Line tube: about the size of a nickel; usually looks smaller/slimmer overall.
- 1" Valu-Line tube: about the size of a quarter; usually looks heavier/bulkier overall.
- If the tube measures around 5/8" to 3/4", choose the .75" version.
- If the tube measures close to 1", choose the 1" version.
- Measure the actual aluminum tube the fabric wraps around — not the bracket, end cap, paint buildup, rust, or a damaged area.
Still unsure? Place a quarter next to the tube and snap a photo. Our AI Live Chat can usually identify whether you need .75" or 1" from that photo.

NOTE: How to Measure Tubes and Top Rails
- Tag: Located on the top header mounting rail, it resembles a price tag and contains a 6-digit number (see image below).
- Measuring a Top Header Rail: If the width is 1 3/8 inches, the tube is likely a 1 1/4-inch outside diameter. If the width is 1 inch, the tube is typically a 3/4-inch or 1-inch outside diameter.
- Measuring a Tube: Measure the outside diameter of the aluminum tube that the fabric wraps around. Pull the fabric down to measure (do not remove the fabric from the tube if it’s still attached). Do not measure brackets, end caps, paint buildup, rust, or a crushed/damaged area. As a quick check, .75" tubes are about nickel-size and 1" tubes are about quarter-size.
How to Adjust the Spring Tension on Your RV Roller Shade
Over time, your RV roller shades may start to retract too slowly or snap back too fast. Luckily, adjusting the internal spring tension is a simple fix you can do yourself. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to safely adjust the shade tension and restore smooth operation.
🔧 What You’ll Need:
- Phillips screwdriver (or drill with bit)
- Your roller shade removed from the mounting brackets
- A clean, flat work surface

🛠️ Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Remove the shade from the window.
Gently unclip or unscrew the roller shade from its mounting hardware and lay it flat on a table. -
Identify the spring-loaded end.
One end of the shade has a spring mechanism (usually with a small tab or flat metal arm). -
Unroll the fabric completely.
Pull the fabric down so the shade is fully extended and there’s no spring tension inside the roller. -
Manually wind the spring.
While keeping the shade unrolled, turn the spring-loaded end of the roller counter-clockwise to increase tension. Each full turn adds more tension. Typically, 10–20 rotations work best. -
Test and rewind.
After winding, slowly guide the fabric back onto the roller to test the new tension. If it recoils too fast or too slowly, repeat steps 3–5 and adjust accordingly. -
Reinstall the shade.
Once you’re happy with the tension, remount the shade to the window bracket using your original screws or clips.

💬 Frequently Asked Questions
A: Check the outside diameter of the roller tube itself. A .75" Valu-Line tube is about nickel-size and slimmer; a 1" Valu-Line tube is about quarter-size and bulkier. If your measurement is around 5/8" to 3/4", choose .75". If it is close to 1", choose 1". Premium slow-rise models are usually 1.25". If you are still unsure, place a quarter next to the tube and upload a photo in AI Live Chat.
A: Start with 12–15 full turns. If the shade retracts too weakly or too quickly, adjust in increments of 2–3 turns until you find the sweet spot.
A: The spring may have come loose or lost internal tension. Remove the shade again, fully unwind the spring, and try re-winding it. If it still doesn’t hold, the spring may need to be replaced.
A: You can, but older springs tend to weaken or warp over time. For smoother operation and reliability, replacing the spring is recommended, especially on frequently used shades.
A: No. These are OEM Irvine Shade & Door springs and are specifically designed for their Valu-Line and Premium roller shades. Compatibility with other brands is not guaranteed.
