Fixing Pleated RV Day Shade Blinds with Fold Memory Issues

Customer Question

How can I restore the fold memory of my new RV pleated day shade blind, which is not holding its pleats properly, especially in the center area? It seems the pleats may have been damaged or flattened during shipping or storage.

Expert Answer

Pleated RV day shades sometimes lose their fold memory due to tight storage or shipping compression, especially in the center area. To help restore the pleats, first gently raise and lower the shade several times to encourage the fabric to remember its folds. With the shade fully extended, manually pinch and crease the pleats along the entire width, focusing on the problematic center section. Leaving the shade fully raised (stacked) for 24 to 48 hours can also help set the pleats. If your shade’s fabric permits, applying gentle warmth with a hair dryer on a low setting while reshaping the pleats may improve fold retention. For fabric shades (not vinyl or plastic), using a handheld steamer held a few inches away while pinching the pleats back into shape can further assist in restoring the pleat memory. Avoid overheating or applying direct heat to prevent damage. These methods can often revive the pleat structure and improve the appearance of your RV day shade.
